The growing population of deer is causing thousands of dollars in landscape damage to flowers, trees and shrubs in neighborhoods. The over-abundant presence of deer has also impacted the likelihood of an encounter while driving. Missouri is now classified as one of three states deemed “high-risk” for deer collisions according to insurance companies. There has also been an increase in cases of deer-borne tick disease among humans and domestic pets from ticks hiding in your own backyard!
With no natural predators in Missouri, the deer population has outgrown the sustainability of the current suburban habitat. Over grazing of forest areas is harming the ecosystem of many other wildlife species. Deer are eliminating food sources quicker than Mother Nature can regenerate. This population increase is also causing disease among herds, domestic pets and deer-born tick diseases are on the rise. Harvested deer are donated to several different organizations in the St. Louis area. All parts of the deer are utilized for food and nothing goes to waste. Over the past 15 years, Certified Bow Hunters has harvested over 1,200 deer from the St. Louis region. One beneficiary of our efforts has been a Missouri Department of Conservation sponsored program, Share The Harvest. In 2017, hunters donated 289,292 pounds of venison to Share The Harvest that was distributed through local food banks. Certified Bow Hunters of St. Louis County was founded in 2003 by a small group of professional archers who were sought out by residents and alderman of Clarkson Valley, MO to help solve their deer population crisis. Clarkson Valley was the first St. Louis County community to utilize bow hunting as a safe and effective solution for this problem. Since the implementation and success of bow hunting in Clarkson Valley, many other communities in St. Louis County including Ballwin, Chesterfield, Eureka and Sunset Hills have also legalized bow hunting to solve their deer over-population issues.
